Groundbreaking Ceremony

Cycling Sports Center Schwerin

The foundation stone for the cycling centre, one of the largest sports buildings in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, was ceremoniously laid in December 2024. The event was attended by Minister-President Manuela Schwesig. The building will feature a 250-meter indoor cycling track built to international standards, as well as a two-court sports hall that will be used for both club and school sports. Its distinctive oval architecture is inspired by the shape of the cycling track. To preserve existing parking areas, the structure will be built on columns.

The electrical and conveyor technology is being planned by Inros Lackner in close collaboration with the architects from Baumschlager Eberle Berlin and the city of Schwerin. Special focus is being placed on the implementation of innovative technologies, including energy-efficient lighting, impact-resistant installations in the cycling hall, and a custom lift capable of transporting not only people and racing bicycles but also "pacing motorcycles" and a mobile lifting platform for maintenance purposes. Additionally, the parking garage will be equipped with activity-based lighting, complemented by a modern fire alarm and safety lighting system.

The total project cost is approximately 25 million euros, with 16.5 million euros funded by the state, nearly 4 million euros by the federal government, and 4.5 million euros by the city of Schwerin. Around 1.1 million euros will be spent on the electrical and conveyor technology. A highlight of the groundbreaking ceremony was the placement of a time capsule, carried out by the mayor of Schwerin using a foundation drilling device. Completion of the new building is planned for December 31, 2025 – a bold target for an impressive and functional sports center.
