Kigamboni Port Museum

Tanzania, July 2026: The kick-off meeting on 29 July marked the official launch of the new Kigamboni Port Museum in Dar es Salaam. The museum will preserve, showcase and bring to life the country’s centuries-old maritime heritage, making it accessible to the public. For the first time, our focus is therefore not on the further development of the port’s infrastructure, but on the history and significance of the port for the development of Dar es Salaam and Tanzania including Zanzibar: over the centuries, the former fishing village of Mzizima evolved into one of the key trading and port locations along the East African coast. Swahili culture and historic trade links across the Indian Ocean shape the city and its role as a maritime centre.

The museum is being developed in the Kigamboni district, close to the historic Lighthouse dating from 1890. In addition to exhibition areas, the museum will include spaces for education and events and community engagement. The aim is to have a Museum covering the port-maritime industry, promote education and contribute to the development of tourism and cultural exchange.

The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has appointed INROS LACKNER SE as Lead Consultant for the feasibility study, concept development and subsequent planning phases. The project is being implemented together with joint venture partner APEX Engineering and sub-consultant Quantum Space Architects. Particular attention is being paid to requirements relating to sustainability, as well as environmental and social compatibility. The kick-off meeting marked the start of the first project phase. The Consulting team was strongly represented by Dr Klaus Richter, Managing Director, Dorothée Strachwitz, Head of the Tanzania office from Inros Lackner SE, and Torsten Illgen, Lead Architect and Chairman of Inros Lackner Vietnam as well as Eng. Richard Mushi from APEX in addition to selected members of the Team (Mr. Huruma Kissaka, Sociologist and Prof. Deogratius Mushi, Economist). The project builds on our long-standing collaboration with the Tanzania Ports Authority and numerous projects in the field of port development.
