Museum Island, Berlin

Berlin’s Museum Island is one of the world’s most important groups of historical museums and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The different museums were connected together by a new entrance building, the James Simon Gallery, and an underground walkway. For the central entrance building and visitor centre, Inros Lackner prepared the planning approval design and developed further detailed designs for heating, cooling, sanitation, firefighting plant, kitchen equipment and ventilation. Key elements of the work included a central cooling facility with new cooling plant, a central heating facility based on district heating, a firefighting water supply including hydrants and sprinklers, a thermal mass activation system in the walls to minimise energy consumption, kitchen technology for the café, and ventilation and air-conditioning plant for the entire building.
