Safe Schools, Mozambique
Following the devastation caused by Cyclone Idai in 2019, Inros Lackner, on behalf of KfW and the Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH), is supporting the reconstruction of school infrastructure in Sofala Province, near Beira. The special programme, financed with six million euros by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), aims to restore and modernise the affected schools in a climate-resilient manner. The project encompasses the renovation and construction of classrooms, administrative buildings, and water and sanitation facilities, in line with the UN-Habitat concept for safe schools. A central feature of the project is the active involvement of local stakeholders. Planning and implementation were largely carried out by local professionals and companies. Inros Lackner provided ongoing planning support and project management, while specialist designs for structural engineering, electrical systems, and water supply and sanitation were developed by the local firm TÉCNICA Engenheiros Consultores, Lda.
Through optimised planning and construction processes, the originally envisaged construction period of 21 months was reduced to 12 months. Work began in September 2023 and was completed in 2025. The project makes a meaningful contribution to strengthening the region’s educational infrastructure and enhancing its resilience to natural disasters.
