Alluvial forest development, Brandenburg

Compensation measure for Oder dyke restoration

In connection with the restoration of the Oder dyke, around 10 km between the villages Eisenhüttenstadt and Ratzdorf, alluvial forest areas were developed on former agricultural land as a compensatory measure. The measure took place within the "Oder-Neisse" fauna-flora habitat area. Immediately adjacent are designated areas of fauna-flora habitat type 91F0 "Oak-elm-ash alluvial forests on the banks of large rivers". In keeping with the prevailing flora and fauna, native trees and shrubs appropriate to the location, such as English oak, elm, blackthorn and hawthorn, were planted to ensure the natural development and expansion of the alluvial forest. The planting was carried out as an initial planting on a total of seven partial areas. Subsequently, the measure will be monitored over a period of 8 years.
