Lagoon system Lomé, Togo
The Lomé lagoon is part of a large lagoon system that stretches from the Ivory Coast to Nigeria. The eastern lake with an area of about 30 ha and the 2.7 km long Canal de grande égalisation are both part of this lagoon system. In recent years, siltation of the canal and the lake has increased considerably due to the heavy influx of faeces. As a result, algae growth has increased while the retention volume has decreased. As the two gravity channels that normally drain water from the lagoon to the sea were blocked, severe flooding occurred in the area, affecting local residents during the rainy season. Inros Lackner Togo has prepared an environmental study for the rehabilitation and expansion of the system and planned dredging to improve the current situation.
