Life on the water
A new residential area, to be known as “Waisengärten”, is being developed in the German city of Schwerin. It is located near the city centre and next to the city’s castle, on the edge of Schwerin Lake. First, the technical infrastructure required for the development of the eight-hectare property with multi-storey apartment buildings is to be provided. The services are to be provided in two stages, over a period of several years. In order to minimise impacts on traffic from the construction work, the transport facilities are also being developed in two phases.
Water supply and wastewater disposal facilities are also being newly provided. Due to the difficult soil conditions (including peat and lake marl), the infrastructure facilities require special foundations in some cases. Extensive nature conservation measures are also to be implemented. These include, for example, numerous water-bearing, nature-orientated ditches and bodies of water, and a tunnel for amphibians.
