Land protection dike, Helgoland

Elevation of the dykes

The coastal protection in the northeast of the island of Helgoland is being adapted to the rising sea level and the design sea state. The flood protection dikes do not meet current requirements either in terms of embroidery height or construction. The dikes, which were built between 1952 and 1955 and already damaged by the severe storm surge of 1962 and subsequently repaired, will be adapted to the design sea level BHW +4.70 mNHN. For this purpose, the exceptional sea conditions, explosive ordnance load, location in high-quality protected areas (FFH, EU bird sanctuary, etc.) and tourist concerns are taken into account. In addition, the special features of building on an island, with the corresponding construction logistical challenges, must be taken into account.
