Zwickauer Mulde, Saxony

Preparation of flood hazard and risk maps

During the flood events of 2002 and 2013, the Zwickauer Mulde was heavily affected, especially in the localities of Zwickau and Glauchau. As part of the implementation of the Flood Risk Management Directive of the European Union (FRMD; EU Directive 2007/60/EC), the Water Resources Act (WHG §74) and the Saxon Water Act (SächsWG §71), flood hazard and flood risk maps were prepared for 11 municipalities along the Zwickauer Mulde. In the course of this, sensitivity and vulnerability analyses were also carried out. For this purpose, the Zwickauer Mulde was modelled as a 2D simulation between Wolkenburg and Niederschlema, including upstream and downstream sections, and calibrated using the 2013 flood event. In subsequent projects, the Zwickauer Mulde was extended in terms of modelling technology, so that a continuous overall model of almost 130 km is now available.
