Kassel city lock, Germany
Due to the downgrading of the Fulda to "other waterway", the Kassel city lock lost importance for large-scale navigation. In connection with the limited state of construction, the structure was decommissioned by the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration. The city took over the lock from the federal government, which contributed 50 percent of the construction costs for the new lock. The old lock chamber from 1913 was pumped empty for the new construction and served as a building pit for the new reinforced concrete lock. This is much smaller and fits in with the dimensions of the neighbouring locks. Special challenges in this project were the requirements for the protection of historical monuments, the difficult access conditions to the construction site and the crossing of the construction site by water sports enthusiasts during the construction phase.
