National Waterway-1, India

Deepening for inland navigation

Inros Lackner is involved in the navigability of the National Waterway-1, India's most important waterway and part of the Baghirati-Ganges river system. Over a distance of 711 kilometres, the sacred river with a high economic importance is to be kept navigable as an alternative means of transport. On behalf of the Indian Inland Waterways Authority (IWAI) and the World Bank, Inros Lackner and 40 German and Indian engineers are responsible for the comprehensive local construction supervision and project management as Technical Service Support Consultant and Project Management Consultant. Over a period of 5 years, the main navigation channel will be kept navigable in 6 sections by continuous maintenance dredging. The fairway depth to be guaranteed is between two and three metres. The challenge here is the seasonally strongly fluctuating water level. The expected dredging volume is around 35 million cubic metres.
