River restoration, Saxony
The new construction of the Niederpöbel flood retention basin as a flood protection measure is associated with interventions in nature and the landscape. The "Förstergrund ditch renaturation" project was initiated as a compensatory measure. The project is divided into the restoration of the upper reaches of the watercourse, the restoration of the lower reaches of the standing watercourse and the conversion of an area of arable land into vegetation along the watercourse. The total area of the measures on and next to the watercourse is approx. 20,860 m². The renaturation includes, among other things, the following partial services: Development of a watercourse corridor with riparian strips, creation of a meandering watercourse and two stillwaters as alternating wet flood polders, creation of an overflow threshold, integration of existing outlets into the new embankments to be constructed, as well as the planting of 5,500 shrub plants and the sowing of a fresh meadow covering more than 1.5 ha.
