Port of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
With a cargo handling capacity of over 95% of the country’s international trade, the port of the city of Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s most important port. The port has eleven deep water berths, of which four are used for container operations and seven for general cargo operations. The main objective of the project was to analyse the technical, financial and environmental feasibility of the most suitable approach to modernising cargo handling procedures at Berths 1 to 7. Elements of the feasibility study were for example the elaboration of both ad-hoc and long-term improvement measures for handling of bulk, mixed and ro-ro (vehicular) cargo, the optimisation of the overall port layout as well as planning and design of new access roads and a railway connection. Currently, the modernisation work and the construction of Ro-Ro terminals in the port are being accompanied.
