Mühltal power station discharge structure, Bavaria
Artificial stream for improved water flow through power station

As an ecological compensation measure, enabling more water to be channelled to the Mühltal power station, a stream has been “initiated” on the left floodplain of the River Isar. Starting at the outfall from the headwater, the flow path was first roughly defined by excavating a channel with a bed of continuous gradient. Stabilisation measures for the bed and sides of the channel were not deemed necessary. 

The stream is crossed by three minor roads, which are used by the power plant owner for access and by the Bavarian forestry authorities in its forest management and hunting-related activities. The required culverts were thus designed for heavy traffic loading (SLW 60). To enable the specified amount of water to be released into the new stream in a controlled manner, it was necessary to construct a new discharge structure. This structure has two discharge outlets, one of which is equipped with a sliding gate valve. The openings are designed to enable water to flow through to the new stream at a rate of up to 2 mÑ/s. Sheet piling was used to enable the structure to be built below water level.
