Renaturation of a moor, Rostock
Development of spaces for flora and fauna

The moors that formed in the one-time floodplains of the Baltic Sea are an unmistakeable part of northern Germany’s coastal landscape. Like in many other near-coast places, the natural hydrological system of the Diedrichshäger Moor suffered from extensive, long-term drainage works. The renaturation measures were designed to restore the natural fen function in certain areas and develop high-quality living areas for plants and animals, in the medium to long term. Preservation-worthy soil types will be maintained and may be supplemented, in the long term, by new, local turf accumulation.

Within the approx. 150-hectare project area of the Diedrichshäger Moor, extensive surveys of the existing situation and preliminary investigations were carried out in order to assess the possibilities for improvement and ecological restoration measures. This necessitated, in particular, hydrological, hydrogeological and pedological surveys, and surveys of the existing flora and fauna.
